Brazil has more to it than football, beaches and the supermodel Gisele Bundchen - its property is tempting, too. Indeed, it seems to be helping the country ride out the global recession.

Anyone who is anyone in the hotel world is trying to get into Brazil at the moment,' says Mr Irvine.

Brands said to be interested include the Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and Banyan Tree. This lush-green corridor of virgin rainforest between Rio and Sao Paulo - with its huge frigate-birds lending it a Jurassic Park feel - has attracted interest from Amanresorts, as has the north-eastern state of Alagoas.

Alagoas is selling itself as a 'six-star' destination, turning down all-inclusive hotel brands in favour of top names such as Amanresorts and Six Senses Resorts, according to Felipe Cavalcante, president of ADIT Nordeste, which advises investors in the tourism and property sectors.

It has escaped the speculators and mass market tourism development of Natal,' he says. Bahia (a state farther south in Brazil) may be the most exclusive destination in Brazil, but it lacks premier brands.

Indeed, those after a more rustic brand of luxury head to the remote fishing village of Trancoso in Bahia, favoured by Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bundchen and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Battle of the Opera

This weekend saw the reopening of Buenos Aires famous ‘Teatro Colón’ following a seven year restoration, costing $25 million US dollars. The refurbishment of the ornate 2700 seat theatre began with the measurement of its acoustics back in 2001, just as millions of Argentines were plunged into poverty.

However, not even an economic crisis could derail the ambitious refurbishment of the theatre, modelled on Milan’s ‘La Scala’ and the building closed at the end of 2006 so that stucco facades, columns and French stained glass could be painstakingly restored. The range and scope of a country larger than mainland USA can make the idea of planning a trip to Brazil a little daunting. However, by thinking about what you really want from the trip (and what is available) you should be able to plan an unforgettable honeymoon with a little care and attention.

First off, after a hectic wedding build up the first thing you're likely to want to do is get straight to the beach. But which type of beach? With over 4,000 miles of coastline Brazil has a huge range of different beach locations, so you should think about which suits you best:

- For Rustic chic and laid back beach village life, there's no place better than the hip beach village of Trancoso. There's plenty of restaurants, bars and shops in the village (though all low key luxury, very much in keeping with the natural style of the place) and great beaches nearby. It does get busy (and very expensive) during New Year's Eve and Carnival.

- For ease of access, Buzios (to the East of Rio) and the 'Costa Verde' (to the West) can't be beaten as you don't have to jump on a plane to get there from your international flight. Naturally some of the exclusivity can be lost, but choosing the correct hotel will make the difference. Buzios has more options for bars and nightlife, whilst further down the coast in Paraty or Picinguaba things are a little more relaxing (particularly in Picinguaba)

- For water sports (kite surfing and windsurfing) and possible one of the most unique beach locations in the world, Jericoacoara can't be beat. This is a very secluded spot on the North coast of Brazil surrounded by giant sand dunes. The seclusion does mean that travel takes a little longer, but it really makes for an unforgettable experience

- For tropical island seclusion, Boipeba is a great place to honeymoon, with miles and miles of class palm fringed beaches and a feeling that you have the place almost to yourselves. The lack of development here means that full luxury just isn't present but there are some charming pousadas to choose from which are very comfortable personal places to stay

- For high end luxury, seclusion and deserted beaches, Corumbau in the South of Bahia (a couple of hours drive from Trancoso) is the perfect place to unwind in full comfort.

- For the most unique and exclusive honeymoon beach destination one needs look no further than Fernando de Noronha, a protected tropical island paradise a one hour flight from the north east coast. The protected tropical waters are teeming with sea life making this one of the premier destinations for diving for the world. The strictly limited number of visitors to the island (around 400), means, that the beaches are deserted and are the perfect romantic setting for your honeymoon. Exclusivity comes at a price however with accommodation significantly more expensive than the mainland.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve 2011 in Rio de Janeiro

Who doesn’t harbour a lifelong dream of celebrating New Year in Rio, dressed in the hippest white outfit to show off a blazing tan, as fireworks explode like confetti overhead? Ride the wave of the infectious Brazilian party spirit and welcome 2011 in with a bang. Latin America’s most marvellous city moves fast, so here are the Dehouche insider’s tips to get the very best of it.

12 pm - Start the celebrations with a long, lazy lunch at Aprazivel in Santa Teresa. This wonderful restaurant is set high up on the hill of Santa Teresa, Rio’s bohemian quarter, and has truly inspirational views of Rio, particularly from the private tree house: Just ring the bell for another passion fruit caipirinha.

Tour do Rio

The ‘Tour de France’ is over for another year; the competition which began in 1903 and which annually ignites not only Gallic passion but at times international furore; from strikes (only in France) to blockades, diversions and even sneaky train rides. Yet there’s a new event to mark on the international cycling calendar, itself beginning in a city which divides the hearts of many; ambivalence is not a feeling often harboured towards the painfully beautiful Rio de Janeiro and the ‘Tour do Rio’ promises blood, toil, tears and sweat in abundance.

The first competition of its kind in Latin America, the tour is due to begin in earnest tomorrow, covering some of the most spectacular scenery the state of Rio has to offer between now and the 1st of August. Organisers hope that the event will do for Brazil what the Tour de France has done for France and the Giro d’Italia has done for Italy. The tour has already generated 1500 jobs and according to luxury Brazilian travel experts ‘Dehouche’, to some extent marks the beginning of a new era for the city, which over the coming years will host a myriad of international sporting events including both the world cup final in 2014 and the summer Olympics in 2016. However, despite the city’s association with inherent natural beauty, Rio’s residents, or Cariocas, were recently named the most obese in Brazil by local magazine ‘Veja’, suggesting the event might inspire those carrying extra kilos to get in shape, as well as offering training for potential future athletes. Ouch.

The competition to which even Lance Armstrong was invited, (though his appearance is sadly doubtful due to having just completed the Tour de France) will cover some 783km, the first stretch of which will traverse the stunning coastal road from the city of Rio to the port of Angra, on Rio’s Emerald Coast. Led by a carnival akin to that of its predecessor, the competition will go on to negotiate mountains, beaches and colonial towns as 150 athletes and an estimated 200,000 people follow the course whose road eventually leads back to the marvellous city itself and cyclists compete to cross the finish line within the inimitable bay of Botafogo, framed by Sugar loaf mountain and overlooked by Christ the Redeemer from atop the Corcovado mountain. ‘Dehouche’ who are resident locally, intend to be there to witness this exciting moment in Rio’s history.

The 26km warm up stage in the mountainous region above Rio which started in Petrópolis and wound its way towards nearby Teresopolis has already been won by Brazilian cyclist David Leite. However, the stages of the tour itself will average a sweaty 150km per day; the attraction? Total prize money of R$175,000 (approx 100,000 USD) which will be distributed amongst the first 20 to complete each of the various stages, with total prize money of R$35,000 for the overall winner; whether any yellow t-shirts or similarly themed clothing will also be awarded remains to be seen. The order of the first stage will be decided in Copacabana this evening as participants prepare themselves for the first test. None of the ‘Dehouche’ team members have signed up to participate this year as they’re far too busy taking care of clients holidays, but there’s always next year.

Sao Paulo Just Keeps Getting Better! – Assures Dehouche

The Fasano group has announced recently that they are again starting work on the development of their neighboring building. The development will create a further 20 guest rooms, including a huge presidential suite (to respond to the increasingly large entourages of the increasing number of international celebrities who are visiting the city), as well as a full sized rooftop swimming pool and another bar, which as with the Fasano’s Barreto in Sao Paulo, or Londra in Rio de Janeiro, will undoubtedly quickly become a popular haunt Brazilian and foreign celebrities alike. Although they have been in possession of the property for some years, the project was put on hold during the recent ‘crisis’ times, but has been taken up again with gusto in response in particular to the increasing number of leisure visitors to the city. According to luxury travel company Dehouche’s concierge, who makes a point of always having his finger on the pulse of this trend-setting city, Fasano insiders have been saying that they could have sold these new rooms twice over in the last few months (even though its low season), and 40% of requests have been from international (largely US) tourists, travelling for pleasure not business.

Sao Paulo may long have been the premier business destination in South America, in its role as the continent’s economic powerhouse, but it is only in recent years that tourists have begun to appreciate the city’s more laid back side. For much the same reasons people visit New York, the main draw to Sao Paulo is its restaurants, nightclubs and plentiful culture – from the ever bigger SP fashion week, open-air concerts in Ibirapuera park, street theatre on Avenida Paulista, to London style impromptu but very much gentrified ‘raves’ in abandoned warehouses.

As always national tourism is leading the trend, also encouraged by a current TV campaign from the Sao Paulo council, but the rest of the world hasn’t been slow to catch on, and Dehouche is receiving an ever increasing number of requests to include the city in their itineraries - surprisingly mostly from city dwellers themselves in New York, LA and London.
